~Music and our heart beat~

Topic- Music and our heartbeat

Question- Does different types of genera’s of music affect our heart beat in one minute?

Background Information- Our heart rate is affected by music, but the way it effects us is by the speed, rhythm, volume, and finally if the lyrics or instrumental notes effect our emotions in a specific level. If the speed and rhythm of the song is fast paced then we tend to be more alert, and aware. When compared to listening to a slower song you would be calmer, meditative, and your heart rate would be at a slow steady pace. Compared to hardcore rock where your heart pace would increase exponentially along with breathing rate. An interesting thing is that we do not have to be listening to music to have if effect us in our everyday life. For example our breathing is rhythmatic if we breathe deep, or at a slow rate it would have the same effect as if we were listening to a slow pace song we would be relaxed and calm. So yes music does affect us not only physically, but emotionally as well.

Hypothesis- I believe that different types of genera’s do affect our heart rate.

Procedure-

1.) First to do the experiment you must choose anywhere from 3-5 songs but they must all be different genera’s. Here is a sort list of genera’s that you could use:     *Blues
    *Rock/soft rock
    *Rap
    *Jazz
    *Screamo
    *Alternative
    *Classical
    *Country
    *Orchestra

Once you have chosen 3-5 of these genera’s or other types. Burn the amount of songs on a blank disk or buy the songs on Itunes or if you already have the songs needed then just use those. You must have the songs on an Ipod, CD player, or some device that allows the use of headphones.

2.) Then ask a friend our family member if you could use a minimum of 5 minutes of their time.

3.) Make sure you are recording everything on your recording device when do the experiment.

 ~The First test~

The resting heart rate for __________________was___________beats.

1.)    The genre that I had for the first test is__________________.

2.) What was the heart rate for this genre________________.

What was the difference between the resting heart rate and the heart rate from the song? Did he/she’s heart rate pick up in pace, slow down, or did it not change at all?

4.) Once you have a person find quiet places to have them sit and just relax before testing for about 2 minutes. Then when you think they are relaxed place your index finger and middle finger on their wrist and count the number of beats in 15 seconds. To configure the amount in one minute, times the number of beats in the 15 seconds by 4. The resting heart rate can be 60-110 beats in the one minute time period. Finally once that is finished enter that number in your chart for your resting heart rate.

Here is an example on how to place your fingers correctly on the wrist.

5.) Now have that person put in the headphones and turn on the first song that you are using. The volume should be at a level at a comfortable hearing rate. Once the song has started, start counting the number of beats for one minute of the song.

6.) For recording the next songs you must now have that person’s heart rate down to the resting rate before testing the next song. So just repeat step 3, and record the resting heart rate for each new test.

7.) Once he/she’s heart rate is at resting you can repeat step 4, 5, and 6 until you have recorded all chosen genera’s.

8.) Finally once you have finished, and make sure you have all of the questions and heart rates filled out.

Materials- The materials that are needed are listed below.

*Recording sheet that states the following: resting heart rate, heart rate after listening to the song and stating how did the person’s heart rate change from the start of the song to the end. Along with some sort of writing tool to record the data.

*A CD, MP3, or other music holding devices that will hold the songs that you have picked out, and has the use of using headphones.

*A calculator

*Finally a person to test on

Your blog is pretty interesting to me and your topics are very relevant. I was browsing around and came across something you might find interesting. I was guilty of 3 of them with my sites. “99% of blog managers are committing these 5 errors”. http://tinyurl.com/d8r7ejo You will be suprised how fast they are to fix.
